Developed in the 1970s by chiropractor Dr. Kenso Kase to replace stiff medical tape, kinesiology tape is now used by physical therapists and other practitioners for its ability to work with the body to promote healing.
According to research, kinesiology tape helps relieve pain and improve movement by lifting the skin, allowing for more space and reducing pressure on the joints, muscles, and tendons. The elasticity of the tape allows for range-of-motion and reduces friction, which in turn aids blood flow. It also helps reduce swelling, and encourages lymph flow.

Before you apply kinesiology tape, you must prepare the area to be taped by thoroughly cleaning it. Then, cut the tape to the appropriate length and shape based on the area being treated. Be sure to remove the paper at the beginning of the tape, and only use the adhesive end (called the anchor) when sticking it onto your skin. If the area has excessive hair, you may want to shave or trim it first.
Lastly, make sure to rub the tape down gently and evenly so that it sticks well to your skin. Once applied, kinesiology tape should stay on for up to five days. However, if you notice any discomfort or pain after removing the tape, consult your doctor for further evaluation and treatment. (1)
